A kid’s point of view: fake honey

Don’t buy this! It’s not real honey, it’s just corn syrup!

By Colleen, age 11

On Sunday, as I reached for the classic bear-shaped honey bottle, I noticed in small print the word “imitation.” I did not think Mom saw that it was fake because it was in a bear bottle. I bet the only reason it was made was to deceive people.

When I looked at the label it had three ingredients: high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup and artificial flavor.

To see if it was really that different, I looked at this fake honey under the microscope and then compared it to real honey. What I found was that there were many strange things in the fake honey, but not in the pure honey. Now I always double check.

This is one of the weird things I saw in the fake honey when I looked under my microscope.

Thanks for noticing this, kid. How aggravating! Thought I was getting a bargain, but instead I just bought overpriced corn syrup in disguise…
