A 13-mile birthday run/walk

Traci took a minute to stretch before our last run segment.

What a beautiful day for a 13.36 mile run/walk — and an awesome way to help celebrate my sister’s birthday.

This plane was doing loops overhead at one point near the River Greenway.

We ran about half that distance, in chunks ranging from 1 to 3 miles, with our fastest mile at 9:40 and our slowest, during a walking phase, a tad over 14 minutes. Our average pace was 12:31 a mile, including a bathroom stop and a quick stretching segment before our last run. That easily beat our 4 miles per hour goal but it’s hardly sustainable over a 90-mile distance.

The weird thing is that I feel like the walking was harder in some ways than the running, because we were going pretty fast at times — around 13 minutes — and I was taking these giant strides that left my calves feeling sore afterward. We don’t want to just amble along, but we need to go slower so we can last longer.

Oh yeah, and it would be awesome if neither of us was sick when we do this for real. Traci had a cold and her nose was dripping the whole way, but naturally she refused to cancel out on our plans.
