The bad news: I feel like I’ve got increasingly less control over my running and racing schedule as I try to mesh my needs with those of my family.
The good news: At 48, I’m faster than ever before — at least in part because of that big-picture view.
Earlier this year I expected to spend the summer training for a marathon. Instead, my focus has shifted to speed work to stay more in tune with my sister’s interests as she’s gotten more serous about running. The Sept. 22 Honest Abe Trail Marathon may be falling off my screen for this year, due to kid scheduling conflicts along with a sense of guilt that it might jeopardize my performance in a team triathlon with Traci and my niece Madison the following Sunday.
But … how upset can I be when I’ve managed to place in four of five* races this summer?
I certainly never saw that coming. In fact, I didn’t even realize it until I started writing this post. It’s not like I’m running fast. More like less slow — around 9 minutes a mile. I guess at my age that’s good enough, at least some of the time.
I still might be able to pull off a marathon later in the year. And in the meantime, Traci — who placed in all three of her races** this summer — has agreed to a fall ultra challenge: Marking the third anniversary of my losing 90 pounds in nine months by doing a 90-mile run/walk.
It’s likely to be more of a walk/run to make it more doable and to protect Traci’s achy joints. But she’s a fast walker so it should be interesting to see how that works out.
We haven’t come up with any details yet, other than agreeing we’d like to try it. For now, we don’t even have a date — just a fuzzy sense of excitement left over from our last two 90in9 projects, running 90 miles in nine days in 2011 and biking 90 miles in (just over) nine hours in 2012.
