A kid’s point of view: Avoiding 4-H Fair treats

4hfairBy Colleen, age 10

I have been working at the local 4-H fair a lot lately, so here’s a question: How can I stay away from the fair food?

The answer is:

1. Stay busy. This has been pretty easy, because I have been helping run the 4-H Foundation games. When I take a break, I go look at the animals instead of thinking how good it would be to have a funnel cake or an elephant ear or cheesy fries or … (you get the picture).
2. Bring a snack.
3. Most importantly, do not bring any money!

Now one night, when I made room for it and ran a mile on the treadmill at the Y, I did have a treat: cheesy fries. But most of the food there is empty calories. Even a homemade peanut butter cookie or something would be better than most of the food at the fair.
