Given the green light to use the cardio equipment at the Y, six months ahead of the usual age 11 requirement, Colleen worked out four days in a row this week and wound up with a 3-pound loss after being stuck for the past month.
“I think it’s really fun,” she said. “I haven’t had access to real equipment before, like the weird platform thingy (a stair-stepper type of elliptical) and the chair bike.”
Ron at the Y has been really helpful and supportive. She can do any of the machines she wants, as long as I’m with her and she stays off the weight machines. She decides how long she wants to spend on each machine and what she wants to use next. I just follow along, getting in a little extra exercise.
After closing in on a 10 percent loss last week, I bounced up a pound and a half this week, while Grandpa reports he stayed the same. He’s already lost more than the 6 pounds he set out to lose, though, and as expected, he’s gotten caught up in the competition.
“Our team is 6th out of seventy-some teams!” he texted earlier in the week. “Not far from 3rd place team — 3rd lost 6.13% and we are at 6.01. Not too far behind!”
How we do the rest of the way depends on Colleen and Traci, who’s been “pacing herself” and will presumably start making her push when they return from spring break and she starts running again.
