The bad news: I broke my vow to do the holiday run streak all outdoors.
The good news: I’ve never had so much fun running indoors as I did Tuesday on the track at the Jorgenson YMCA in southwest Fort Wayne.
We recently splurged on a Y membership after being offered a sweet deal through work, and while the local branch in Bluffton doesn’t have much to offer yet, it’s fun to check out the various branches in Fort Wayne.
On Tuesday, Cass and Colleen tried the rock climbing wall while I took a spin on the 1/8 mile track suspended above the basketball courts and fitness center. It’s got a nice cushy surface, large windows for a great view of the rain I was avoiding, and a gently banked outer lane that makes you feel a bit like a race car when you round the corners.
But what I really liked was a small dose of that “running with the herd” feeling that I usually only experience during a race.
I’d been in a bit of a slump with this run streak the last few days, maintaining it without sure where it was heading, but this stop at the Y was motivating not just for me but to see how this could be like an amusement park for the whole family.
The only down side: We got there a bit late and the girls were too tired afterward to tack on a quick visit to see their new baby cousin at Lutheran.
