Broccoli salad evolution

I was going to make my sister-in-law Darcy’s yummy broccoli salad for the Fourth of July party at her and Brent’s place.

Then I found out Traci already made one — using a recipe she got from our other sister-in-law, Dawn.

Having now tried both, I think next time I want broccoli salad I’ll make a hybrid of the two.

I like the mandarin oranges and kicky dressing, which incorporates horseradish, in Darcy’s salad. But I also like the sunflower seeds and chopped onion in Dawn’s version.

Here’s my proposed hybrid broccoli salad recipe:

For the dressing:
1/2 cup reduced-fat ranch dressing
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish

For the salad:
4 cups chopped broccoli
1 15-ounce can mandarin oranges, drained

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/2 cup sunflower seed kernels

1. Mix the dressing ingredients.

2. Mix the salad ingredients.

3. Mix the dressing and the salad.

4. Eat!
